What is VoLTE? How do I enable it, and how does it work?
What is VoLTE?
VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE (Long-Term Evolution). It's a standard for making voice calls over a 4G LTE network rather than the older 2G/3G networks traditionally used for calls.
For GSMA and GSMT, no account changes are necessary. For CDMA, contact customer service to enable VoLTE.
VoLTE offers:
- Better call quality — HD (high-definition) voice, clearer and richer audio
- Faster call setup — calls connect more quickly
- Simultaneous voice + data — you can browse the internet, use apps, or stream while on a call (older networks would drop data during calls)
- Better battery efficiency — no need to switch between networks
- Improved coverage — LTE signals can penetrate buildings better than older networks in some cases
Why VoLTE really matters now
Carriers have shut down their 2G and 3G networks, making VoLTE support a requirement for a phone to make calls at all. Phones without VoLTE support lose calling ability now that 3G has sunset.
Most modern smartphones (post ~2015) support VoLTE. On some phones, you may need to turn the VoLTE feature on in Settings or perform a software update.
Looking for a device IMEI checker or trying to find out if your phone is compatible? Keep reading to learn how to enable VoLTE settings on your device — if your phone contains these Settings, that's a good way to verify compatibility, or go through the plan selection flow on our Plans page to use the IMEI checker. Does VoLTE use my minutes and/or data?
VoLTE phone calls will deduct your minutes at the same rate as a regular call, but will not deduct from your data balance.
Is Wi-Fi calling different from VoLTE?
Wi-Fi calling allows you to make and receive calls and text messages using a Wi-Fi network and your RedPocket Mobile phone number. Your device must be compatible with Wi-Fi calling. Learn more.
Enable VoLTE
Turn the VoLTE feature on in your device settings. Remember, for CDMA, you'll also need to contact customer service to enable VoLTE at the account level. This is only needed once to provision the account.
Most modern smartphones (manufactured after 2022) are already VoLTE-compatible and have this feature enabled by default. So if you have a newer phone and you don't see any options to enable VoLTE, don't worry! It's probably already enabled. If you have an older device and don't see these settings, it's likely incompatible and you will need to upgrade.
