What is VoLTE? How do I enable it, and how does it work?

What is VoLTE?

VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE (Long-Term Evolution). It's a technology standard that allows voice calls to be made over a 4G LTE network rather than the older 2G/3G circuit-switched networks.

With the retirement of 3G, older phones that were 3G-only can no longer make calls or use mobile data. 4G LTE is available and is fast for data, but wasn’t originally designed for voice. That’s why VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is essential: it allows phones to make high-quality voice calls over LTE (or over 5G, the latest version of the mobile network) while still delivering fast data. Without VoLTE, a device cannot work on today’s networks.

How to enable VoLTE

If you are using the GSMA or the GSMT network, no changes to the account are necessary. However, if you are using the CDMA network, contact our customer service team and request for VoLTE to be enabled on your account.

Next, enable VoLTE on your device.

This is important: Most modern smartphones (manufactured after 2022) are already VoLTE-compatible, and this function is enabled by default. Therefore, you likely won't see any VoLTE options in your phone Settings. So if you have a newer phone, and you don't see any options to enable VoLTE, don't worry! It's probably already enabled.

For older phones (pre-2022), enable VoLTE from your device settings:

Enable on Android:

Tap on your phone's Settings.
Tap on Mobile Networks. This may also be called "Cellular" or "Internet".
Look for VoLTE and enable it.

Enable on iPhone:

Tap on your phone's Settings.
Then tap on Cellular.
Then tap on Cellular Data Options.
Tap Voice & Data to enable VoLTE.

Does VoLTE use my minutes and/or data?

VoLTE phone calls will deduct your minutes at the same rate as a regular call, but will not deduct from your data balance.

Is Wi-Fi calling different from VoLTE?

WiFi calling allows you to make and receive calls and text messages using a Wi-Fi network, and your RedPocket Mobile phone number. Your device must be compatible with Wi-Fi calling. Learn more.
