What is a SIM card and how does it work?

What is a SIM card?

A SIM card is a small, removable card that lets mobile phones connect to a cellular network. It stores important information like your phone number, network identity, and contacts.

When you move from one wireless carrier to another, you’ll get a new SIM card from your new carrier. Your new SIM card is what will let your phone connect to your new network instead of the old one.

What is eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM cad that is embedded in your phone. It can be uninstalled, but it can't be taken out, lost, or stolen. A lot of newer phones, including iPhone 14 and newer, are eSIM-only.

Switching wireless carries with eSIM is simple. Your new carrier will send you a QR code after you sign up. All you have to do is scan it, follow the on-screen instructions, and uninstall your old eSIM. Your new service should work from there!

Although your eSIM never really leaves your device, you may hear carriers use terms like “get a new eSIM” or “download our eSIM.”

Remember, once you switch carriers, you can't use your old carrier's physical SIM or eSIM. You’ll need to get a new physical SIM card or a new QR code from your new carrier to install their eSIM.

A special note for eSIM activations

Note! Some of the newest phones on the market now accept OTA eSIM installation. This means that your eSIM can be sent straight to your phone without a QR code. You’ll get a notification, and you can simply tap on it to start the installation process.

RedPocket Mobile supports this type of eSIM activation on the newest iPhones and Android phones. If your device can’t support it, don't worry! We automatically check to see which devices can receive the notification and which ones need the QR code. If you run into trouble, our customer support team will be happy to help you figure it out.
